How to Keep Energy Bills Down During a Hot Summer

As the temperatures rise during the scorching summer months, so does our dependence on air conditioning and other cooling appliances. While staying cool is essential for our comfort, it can lead to a significant increase in energy consumption and soaring energy bills.

So, what can you do to stay comfortable and save money?

1. Check Your Thermostat Settings

Setting your thermostat at an optimal temperature can make a big difference in energy consumption. During the day, aim for a slightly higher temperature, ideally between 78-80 degrees F, if you’re not home. When you get home, you can turn down the thermostat to stay cool, but you can also account for how much cooler it will be at night.

If you work from home, try to keep the thermostat a little higher and use a fan to optimize air flow.

2. Seal Leaks and Insulate

Check for any drafts or leaks in your home that could be letting cool air escape and warm air in. Seal any gaps around windows and doors with weather stripping or caulk. Proper insulation in your walls and attic can also help maintain a consistent indoor temperature, reducing the need for excessive cooling.

If you’re in a rental, you may want to place a specialized cushion under the gap of each exterior door. Again, make a judgment call, but newer builds (like The Retreat@385) are always the best option because they’re more efficient.

3. Utilize Shades and Curtains

Keep your blinds, shades, and curtains closed during the day, especially on windows that receive direct sunlight. Blocking out the sun’s rays can significantly reduce indoor heat and lessen the burden on your cooling system.

Do whatever you need to do to keep light out during the hottest part of the year. If you like, you could go with blackout curtains (a favorite of new parents and light sleepers.) Why? Blackout curtains will block the sun completely and trap heat by the window instead of letting it into the room.
